Steps to complete admissions

Eligibility and prerequisites

While our approach revolves around holistic evaluation, there are some basic requirements every medical student needs to meet for admission and enrollment. Read through the items below to learn more about basic requirements and benefit from additional information and tips.

  • Pre-med advising and resources

As you begin thinking about applying to medical school, please be sure to check in with your pre-med advisors often. They can provide you with incredible insight, resources and expertise that will help you as you begin your journey.

The Wayne State University School of Medicine Admissions Office does not provide advising appointments. This is true for all types of applicants, including re-applicants. We do not hold advising appointments for applicants that received a rejection notice from our medical school.

    Pre-health advisors

Advising appointments for applicants will be referred to their pre-health advisor. Check the NAAHP list If you need assistance locating your pre-health advisor

  • Premedical coursework requirements

    Coursework

Specific coursework is required for admission. In unusual instances and at the discretion of the Admission Committee, you may be granted a waiver for certain course requirements, provided you have an exceptional academic record. Waivers must be requested in writing once an offer of acceptance is extended.

View our Premedical Coursework Policy for information on specific course requirements and recommendations.

  • Relevant experience

Prior experience both in the health care field and in your community are desirable characteristics and improve your chances of being admitted to the Wayne State University School of Medicine. Typically, 85-95 percent of students have community service or volunteer experience as well as research experience.

We recommend pursuing experiences that fuel, engage and build upon your unique passions, whether that's through shadowing, volunteering, lab or community service work.

    • Any student who has completed a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree at Wayne State University, regardless of citizenship.
