Biography

Dr. Chadwell is an Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences and serves as the Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Career Development since 2017.

The director of the Year III Family Medicine and Continuity Clinic Clerkships for seven years, Dr. Chadwell also directed the Year IV Family Medicine Sub-Internships and all departmental electives. Since first joining the School of Medicine as a voluntary faculty member in 1999, her continuous teaching responsibilities have included small-group instruction in the Clinical Medicine I and II courses, Family Medicine and Continuity Clinic clerkship precepting, and the Physical Diagnosis course. She has been recognized with multiple teaching awards, including the Excellence in Clinical Teaching Faculty Award in 2017.

After graduating from Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1994, Dr. Chadwell completed a Family Medicine internship in 1995 and a Family Medicine residency in 1997 at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, where she was named chief resident (1996-1997). She served as assistant director of the Family Medicine Residency Program at Oakwood Hospital (1997-2001), and as associate and interim director of the program at Oakwood Annapolis Hospital (2002-2010).

Dr. Chadwell has served as the faculty advisor for the Family Medicine Interest Group, the Robert R. Frank Student-Run Free Clinic, and the Christian Medical and Dental Association, and is a faculty member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society. In 2011, she was recognized with the WSU Campus Life Leadership Outstanding Student Organization Advisor Award. The School of Medicine’s Gold Humanism Honor Society presented her with the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award in 2012.

Her research and scholarly focus is on undergraduate medical education. She was a co-investigator for the Bridges to Equity $1.37 million grant integrating public health concepts in the medical school curriculum and developing the M.D./M.P.H. dual degree program at WSU. She has served as an elected member of the university faculty senate and on the WSU Student Affairs Committee. Dr. Chadwell was the medical director of the Robert R. Frank Student-Run Free Clinic for 8 years and provides medical student advising and mentorship throughout all years of training. She is currently completing a Women in Academic Medicine Executive Leadership Scholars Program at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Stephen Ross School of Business.
