Guest information

Entry and seating

  • Doors open at 10:00 a.m. for guest seating. 
  • The ceremony starts promptly at 11:00 a.m. and ends at approximately 1:00 p.m.
  • Guests will enter through the main doors to the theater on Woodward Avenue.
  • Guests are admitted by ticket only.
  • Guest seating is open and available on a first-come first serve basis. Seats may not be saved. Please have everyone in your party arrive at the same time.
  • All guests should be seated 30 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony.

Prohibited items

The following items are not permitted in the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Hall. This policy is strictly enforced.

  • Outside beverage or food of any kind
  • Bottles, cans, glass, metal or liquid containers of any kind excluding those needed for babies
  • Weapons of any kind (including guns, pocket knives, pepper spray, and mace)
  • Toy or fake weapons
  • Alcohol or illegal substances
  • Animals (except service animals)
  • Video and/or sound recording devices including laptops, tablets, iPads and/or Go Pros
  • Umbrellas with pointed tips
  • Backpacks
  • Poles, sticks, or selfie sticks
  • Laser pointers
  • Hard-sided bags of any kind
  • Any other item deemed unsafe by venue personnel

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra Hall reserves the right to expand or modify the list of prohibited items at any time.

Wheelchair/mobility limitation seating

The Max has elevators, barrier-free restrooms, and accessible seating on each level. Security staff are available at all entrances to help patrons requiring extra assistance

Guests arriving with their own wheelchairs will need to approach an usher to request an escort to the special needs seating area.

Every effort will be made to try and seat all guests together; however, disability seating is limited and, due to space constraints, it may be necessary that only one escort may accompany the guest to the special seating area.

Interpreting services

Sign language interpreters will be on stage during the ceremony.

SOM merchandise

School of Medicine merchandise will be available to purchase in the Lobby.

Lost and found

If you’ve misplaced an item while onsite for an event, let an usher know and they will connect you with help! If you’re already home, call 313-576-5199, where help is available Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM.

Program book distribution

Program books will be available at seating entrances for guests.
