Biography

Anne Messman, M.D., FACEP, is the associate dean of Graduate Medical Education for the Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Under Dr. Messman, the Office of Graduate Medical Education provides academic oversight for WSU-administered and affiliated residencies.

Dr. Messman joined the faculty in 2013. She served as the medical education fellowship director for the Department of Emergency Medicine, and previously served as the associate director of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Sinai-Grace Hospital. She also has served as the Emergency Medicine Residency Program assistant director at St. John Hospital and Medical Center, as well as the hospital’s director of rotating residents in the Department of Emergency Medicine.

She has received many awards for training and teaching, including the School of Medicine’s Outstanding Faculty Mentor in 2020, the 2018 College Teaching Award, and in 2017 the Academic Teacher of the Year Award and the Voluntary Teacher of the Year Award from Sinai-Grace Hospital. In 2018, the Emergency Medicine Residents Association named Dr. Messman the Associate Residency Director of the Year for her dedication and commitment to the specialty. The award is presented annually to a single recipient and recognizes an assistant or associate residency director who serves as a role model for residents and exemplifies the qualities that residents value in a mentor. That same year she also received the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors Academy Award for Scholarship in Education, which recognizes educators who have an exemplary record of achievement in emergency medicine education and advancing the development of a network of mentors for future growth in emergency medicine education.

Dr. Messman is a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians, the Michigan College of Emergency Physicians, the Academy for Women in Academic Emergency Medicine, the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and Mensa.

She received a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Michigan in 2004, her medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine in 2008 and a master’s of Health Professions Education degree from U-M in 2019. After completing her Emergency Medicine residency at St. John Hospital and Medical Center, Dr. Messman was certified in Medical Education Research by the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors and the Association of American Medical Colleges, completed the Stanford Faculty Development in Medical Teaching program and the Academic Life in Emergency Medicine Faculty incubator faculty development program.
