Biography
Dr. Cher has served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Urology since September 2006. He has a joint appointment in the Department of Pathology and is Chief of Urology at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. He also has the Dr. Donald J. and Dorothy Jaffar Endowed Professorship in Urology. He has been a member of the Department of Urology since 1995.
Dr. Cher’s current research is in the area of bone metastasis and is funded through the National Institutes of Health). He has published 51 peer-reviewed articles in leading journals in his area of research, has published 10 review articles and 10 book chapters. His area of clinical expertise is in urologic oncology, which includes cancers of the kidney, bladder, prostate, testis and urethra. He performs robotic surgery, cryosurgery, brachytherapy, laparoscopy and continent urinary diversion.
Dr. Cher received his M.D. degree from Washington University in 1986 and performed his residency training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas from 1986-90. He then completed a clinical and research fellowship in urologic oncology and cytogenetics at the University of California, San Francisco, from 1992-95.
