Summer Opportunities

The summer break between the end of Year I and the beginning of Year II is about 12 weeks long. You need to plan to use this time to your advantage in deciding which specialty you will apply to or to strengthen your qualifications for the verycompetitive specialties. Everyone should plan at least a two week vacation since this the only extended, scheduled time off during your medical school curriculum.

Clinical Options
Students who want to examine potential fields in medicine can take advantage of the Southeast Michigan Center for Medical Education’s (SEMCME) Summer Externship Program. Many of our clinical partners provide opportunities for students to experience the clinical life of physicians in nearly all specialties. Each year, the WSUSOM hosts SEMCME’s Hospital Day for Year I students to talk with representative from the various hospitals about their summer offerings.More information about local and national Summer Externships is listed on the Student Affairs Website.

Research Options
Students who are looking to strengthen their research portfolio may want to take advantage of the large number research opportunities here at the WSUSOM. Those who are considering applying to the most competitive specialties would benefit from involvement in clinical translational research. There are many other research opportunities available for Year I medical students here in Michigan and outside of the state.
