The Wayne State University School of Medicine’s Bhanu Jena, Ph.D., along with 1998 Nobel Laureate Ferid Murad, M.D., Ph.D., has been invited to join Aligarh Muslim University in India as a visiting professor this summer.
Dr. Jena is the George E. Palade University Professor and a Distinguished Professor of Physiology.
Dr. Jena was invited by AMU to “help the university in its academic mission, including the research program, particularly in the field of Biophysics, Membrane Biology, Biotechnology and the general area of Biological and Biomolecular sciences,” wrote Zameer Uddin Shah, the university’s vice chancellor, in a letter to Dr. Jena. “(Dr. Jena’s) association with AMU will be an honor and source of pride for us.”
The public university with 28,000 students, located in north-central India’s Uttar Pradesh state, about 90 miles southeast of New Delhi, is the alma mater of India’s third president, Zakir Hussain.
“I am honored to be invited to serve as visiting professor and to help AMU in its academic mission,” Dr. Jena said.
He will visit India in June and July as part of the Government of India’s Global Initiative of Academic Networks. The trip, supported by India, includes events at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and Jawaharlal Nehru University, both in New Delhi, where he will present to students and faculty a weeklong series of 14 lectures on porosome-mediated cell secretion and membrane fusion in cells.
Dr. Jena discovered the porosome – a cell’s universal secretory portal – 20 years ago, enabling a molecular understanding of secretion. Last month, his research team published details on the fundamental mechanism of insulin secretion, which may lead to better drug targets for diabetics.
Dr. Murad, a physician and pharmacologist, won the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his co-discovery of nitrous oxide as a signaling molecule. He is a professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology for George Washington University.
