Sonia S. Hassan, M.D., is the Associate Dean for Maternal, Perinatal and Child Health at Wayne State University (WSU) School of Medicine and a Professor in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Hassan received her medical degree from WSU School of Medicine and completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the Detroit Medical Center/WSU. Dr. Hassan is the Director of the WSU Perinatal Initiative, a program established by the President’s office and the Board of Governors, which recruits physician- and basic scientists with an emphasis on perinatal research. She has served as Director of the Center for Advanced Obstetrical Care and Research in the Perinatology Research Branch, NICHD, NIH since its inception. Dr. Hassan is the Project Site Manager for the Perinatology Research Branch on behalf of WSU.

Dr. Hassan has been the author or co-author of over 300 publications and was the lead author of a multi-center, international, randomized controlled trial of vaginal progesterone for the prevention of preterm birth, which demonstrated that the use of vaginal progesterone decreases the rate of preterm birth before 33 weeks of gestation by 45 percent and respiratory distress syndrome by 61 percent.

Dr. Hassan has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Certificate of Merit Award from the Central Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the J. Bay Jacobs American Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Foundation Travel Award, conferred by the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society. Dr. Hassan received the award for the Most Cited Publication in Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology for 2011–2012 for the publication entitled “Vaginal progesterone reduces the rate of preterm birth in women with a sonographic short cervix: a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.”

Dr. Hassan was named Co-Chair for Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan’s Healthcare Transition Team and was named Director of the Mayor’s Preterm Birth Reduction Plan – ‘Make Your Date’, launched in May 2014. Dr. Hassan is the co-chair of Governor Rick Snyder’s Infant Mortality Advisory Council. Dr. Hassan was awarded the 2013 Prematurity Prevention Hero Award from the March of Dimes Michigan Chapter and Winner for Advancements in Health Care, Crain’s 13th Annual Health Care Heroes Award in 2014. In June 2014, Dr. Hassan was named a Michiganian of the Year by the Detroit News.
