Allan Collins, M.D. ’75, F.A.C.P., is head of the Medical Advisory Board and senior medical advisor of NxStage Medical Inc., professor of Medicine for the University of Minnesota, executive director of the Kidney Care Initiative and director of the Chronic Disease Research Group. From 1999 to 2014, he served as director of the United States Renal Data System.
Dr. Collins is a recognized world leader on nephrology and end-stage renal disease.
He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Minnesota Hospitals and his fellowship in Nephrology at Hennepin County Medical Center, University of Minnesota.
Dr. Collins trained under Fred Shapiro, M.D., founder of the Regional Kidney Disease Program at Hennepin County Medical Center, and became the program’s medical director, and from 1983 to 1995, managed its Metropolitan Dialysis Division and clinical database.
In 2014 Dr. Collins joined NxStage, a leading manufacturer of dialysis products.
He received the 2009 WSU School of Medicine Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Award, presented annually to one or more alumni who have made outstanding contributions to humanitarian causes, whose contributions to the health field in the broader sense are outstanding or for service to the Wayne State University School of Medicine. He has published more than 225 articles, 600 abstracts and 20 book chapters, and has given more than 365 invited presentations.
