Isaac J. Powell, M.D., Associate Professor, Department of Urology Wayne State University and Karmanos Cancer Institute, Chief of Urology at the Veterans Administration Hospital of Detroit.

Clinical Interests: Urologic Oncology (Urologic Cancer) and Cancer Genetics.

Special Interests: The focus of my research is on the many ways prostate cancer impacts African Americans in comparison to other ethnic groups. My past research has included community-based education, health care behavior modification, and early detection study of prostate cancer among African American men. As a protocol director for the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG), I have completed a study investigating neoadjuvant hormonal therapy for locally advanced prostate cancer. Currently my research is directed toward ethnic differences in the biology/genetics of prostate cancer. I am Principal Investigator of a nation-wide consortium of recruitment centers (medical centers) whose goal is to recruit families to examine hereditary prostate cancer among African Americans. We recently published our initial results of 4 or 5 regions in the genome where genes responsible for hereditary prostate cancer may be found. In collaboration with others at our institution and other institutions across the country, we are examining androgen-related gene variations (genes responsible for the male hormone production).  We have identified one the genetic variations that appears to be associated with aggressive prostate cancer. We are also studying epigenetic factors (environmental factors that impact on genes) such as diet and inflammation in correlation to clinical outcome. Cancer is a genetic disease, and genetic research has to be apart of the search for a cure.
