Mission and Goals of the Residency
The General Surgery Residency Program provides
a strong academic and clinical foundation for physicians who have
the fund of knowledge, aptitude and mature judgment to be trained
as surgeons and who will be leaders in the field whether it is in
clinical practice, or in an academic setting. The educational curriculum
is designed to give the resident a broad spectrum to all relevant
fields of surgery.
The Wayne State University/Detroit Medical
Center General Surgery Program is a categorical five-year residency.
It is an integrated program, which is housed at Detroit Medical
Center.
The primary goals of the surgical residency
is to: 1) Promote clinical excellence; 2) Train surgeons who can
impart knowledge to others in the field; and 3) Endorse the academic
research skills of surgeons, which include clinical lab and basic
science experiments to enhance the knowledge base and clinical outcomes
of surgical care.
