360 Degree Evaluations

Residents are evaluated at the end of their rotation by a variety of constituents. These evaluations are discussed with the residents by the Program Director approximately every three months. Each resident receives a written summary evaluation semi-annually. Residents are also required to evaluate faculty at the end of each rotation.

Introduction to the 360 Degree Evaluation Process

  1. Resident Self-Assessment: Residents will have an opportunity to assess their own professional competencies three times a year in July, November and March.

  2. Faculty Evaluation of Resident: After each rotation, physician preceptors and senior residents will evaluate the performance of each resident.
  3. Nurses’ Evaluation of Resident: After each rotation, residents will be evaluated by the nurses on the unit.
  4. Evaluation of Resident by Medical Students: Medical students will evaluate general surgery residents at the end of their clinical clerkship.

Evaluation of Clinical Faculty and Program Director

The Residency Program administers additional evaluations to residents and faculty in order to measure the overall quality of the program. The description of these evaluations is listed below:

  1. Annual Program Evaluation: Residents and faculty are required to complete this form on an annual basis. The purpose of this evaluation is to provide the program director with a cumulative assessment of the residency program.
  2. Resident Evaluation of Clinical Faculty and Program Director: The purpose of this form is to assess the skills of the program director and the teaching skills of faculty. Data retrieved from this evaluation will help identify specific ways to improve the instructional delivery system and administration of the residency program.
  3. Evaluation of the Rotation. Residents evaluate the surgical service in which they have been assigned.
