Resident Advancement/Promotion

Resident advancement is based on the following criteria:

  1. In-service exam results
  2. Evaluation by the senior residents and attending staff
  3. Evaluation by medical students
  4. Presentation and preparation for conferences
  5. Preparation for surgical cases
  6. Relationship with other residents, staff, and medical students
  7. Relationship with paramedical personnel or other health care providers
  8. Professional behavior and ethical conduct
  9. Completion of tasks assigned by staff
  10. Operative logs and technical skills
  11. Patient management skills

Using these criteria, each resident’s performance is discussed by the Residency Committee meeting. After the meeting, the program director discusses any weaknesses in performance with each resident or as warranted throughout the year. Residents may be placed on probation at the discretion of the program director, with specific warnings and requirements to return to full status. Advancement and promotion is ultimately be determined by the program director.
