Teresa Holtrop, M.D.
Childrens Hospital of Michigan

Dr. Teresa Holtrop, a pediatrician on staff at Children's Hospital in Detroit, has worked to address health care and literacy issues among the city's children. In 1994, she established the Children's Hospital Pediatric Mobile Team, which brings health care services to children who have difficulty getting to the doctor. She is now the Director of the Pediatric Mobile Team and School Mobile Health Center.  The Team now logs approximately 1,000 encounters per year. Dr. Holtrop also established the Reach Out and Read Program at the Detroit Medical Center. Reach Out and Read supports emerging literacy in young children by taking advantage of opportunities afforded to physicians by the Pediatric Mobile Team and during the well-child visits of children from six months to five years old. Dr. Holtrop is also active in raising community awareness of lead poisoning in children and adults through her work with CLEAR Core (Community Lead Education and Reduction) and the Leadbusters summer program, which she established in 1995.
