Welcome to Wayne State University School of Medicine's Functional Medicine Interest Group!

Here's a little bit about who we are and what we do!

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine is basically a way to use the body's own physiology and biochemistry to look at disease and illness through nutrition instead of pumping patients full of medicine without understanding the root cause of their problems.  Its a really cool area of study and a TON of work is being done in the field right now that will affect the way we practice medicine.

What is the Functional Medicine Interest Group do?

Once a month Dr. Jeffrey Bland, who is on the cutting edge of this area of study, puts out a CD called the Functional Medicine Update.  The CDs focus on a different topic each month, including areas such as GI disorders, Autoimmunity, and Metabolic Syndrome.  Students will listen to selected tracks on the CD, and our group will meet with Dr. Ng one Friday each month during lunch for a discussion on how to put what we heard into practice!
