General Recommendations

  • Create a general strategy for preparation, including study materials, total number of weeks to prepare, and time studying per day.  Do not be inflexible; make changes to the schedule as you see fit.  Limit the number of study materials used.  Allow room in your schedule for days off when you feel you need one.  Follow the study strategies that worked for you in first and second years.

Books

  • I attempted to learn everything in First Aid; it will cover nearly all the exam material.  I thought several chapters were deficient in content (Heme/Onc, Musculoskeletal, Reproductive, Respiratory) and supplemented these chapters with the Kaplan books.  I also read the Kaplan books cover-to-cover once.

Question Bank

  • Q-bank: was a solid question source.  It had sufficient difficulty for exam preparation and the performance feedback was a good feature.  I feel it is best used to prepare for the logistics of test taking.  Reading occupied about 75-80% of my time.

Schedule

  • I prepared for 6 weeks and gave myself about a week’s worth of off-days to stay mentally fresh.  I studied 8-10 hours most days.  The most important factor in doing well is investing sufficient time and energy.
