Wayne State University School of Medicine

Mandatory Health and Disability Insurance

All medical students are required to carry health and disability insurance. Maintaining both personal health and disability insurance throughout the academic year is a requirement for enrollment in the School of Medicine. Failure to comply could result in the cancellation of your registration. Compliance with this requirement will be monitored and students can expect to be required to provide proof of compliance on a random basis.

Health Insurance

Exceptions to Mandatory Enrollment in the Group Health Insurance Plan include:

If student is covered under a spouse, parent, Medicaid, Military or OHIP (Canadian) health insurance policy, you may be eligible for a waiver. The waiver form must be completed and submitted. You will be notified whether or not a waiver has been granted. If you have not been granted a waiver, you will have to enroll in the school’s plan.

Disability Insurance

In compliance with the LCME standard for insurance coverage, medical students are required to purchase disability insurance. To enroll in the mandatory disability plan, students will write a check or money order to Standard Insurance Company for the sum of $48.03, which covers the annual premium.

You may enroll in both the health and disability plans when you register for classes. There will also be an open enrollment period for the health insurance. You will be notified of those dates. An Insurance representative will be present during the registration period to answer any questions you may have about the plans.
