Year IV Educational Objectives

The educational objectives of the fourth year are best achieved by a combination of inpatient, outpatient, and consultative experience in multiple settings which allows for exposure to clinical role models. The student and his/her advisor should strive to construct a balanced program of clerkships, with regard to his/her intended specialty choice's). You will become a specialist during your residency. The goal is to graduate from medical school a well-rounded but "undifferentiated"  physician. The Year IV clerkships have been assigned a category to assist you in balancing your program (shown below); it is unlikely that the YR. IV Committee will approve a program with more than two electives in any category other than primary care:

Remember your goal is to propose a well balanced program:

  1. The student should further develop and refine the ability to perform and document a history and physical examination, obtain laboratory evaluations, formulate an appropriate differential diagnosis, develop a provisional diagnosis, and institute effective management which includes further diagnostic evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation programs.
  2. The student will develop basic skills in triage of emergency patients and subacute and ongoing outpatient management of primary care patients.
  3. The student should be able to monitor the course of an illness and appropriately revise the treatment and rehabilitation planned.
  4. The student should have an understanding of the psychological, social, and economic principles involved in illness and in the delivery of health care.
  5. The student should understand the role of both non-physician health care workers and other physicians in the delivery of health care.
  6. The student should be able to recognize personal educational needs, and should be able to select and utilize the appropriate learning resources to meet his or her objectives.
