Scholarship Programs

School of Medicine Scholarships

Effective for the 2007-08 academic year, students who wish to be considered for a Wayne State University School of Medicine private scholarship must submit an online application. The application will be available mid-December. The submission deadline will be February 28 for returning students and March 31 for new Year I students. Recipients will be notified by the School of Medicine Scholarship Committee in the spring.

Students must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- be a U.S. Citizenship or eligible non-citizenship
- file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
- be admitted to the WSU School of Medicine
- fulfill other requirements as specified by scholarship provisions.

Scholarships are awarded from private funds made possible by the generosity of alumni, friends and other donors to The Wayne State University School of Medicine. Listed below are the scholarships available for annual awards to students:

The Elvis Smith Alford, M.D. and Nellie Corbin Alford Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund will be awarded to a rising 4 th year male Medical School student based upon academic excellence. The School of Medicine Office of Financial Aid and the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs will make the selection.

Alumni Scholars Endowment Fund will be awarded to full time first year medical school students based on their scholastic achievement, community service and leadership qualities. Recipients will be selected by the Deans Scholarship Committee. The scholarships are renewable provided the student remains in good academic standing.

Lewis R. Barak M.D. Memorial Scholarship Fund will be awarded to full time medical school students or those accepted for study at Wayne State University School of Medicine. Recipients will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, leadership qualities and financial need. The recipient will be selected by the School of Medicine 's financial aid office.

The Bar-Levav Family Foundation Endowed Scholarship Fund is available for full time first year medical students. Applicants must write a short essay on their character and scholastic achievements. Recipients will be selected by the School of Medicine 's Dean' Scholarship Committee. Prior recipients may retain the award each year provided they remain in the top half of their class.

The I. Robin Barraco, Ph.D. Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund in the Neurosciences at the School of Medicine will be awarded to a rising Year III or Year IV. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Preference will be given to minority students. Recipients will be selected by the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.

The David W. Barron M.D. and William H. Barron M.D. Endowed Father and Son Memorial Scholarship for Year I or Year III medical students. Preference will given to medical students whose father graduated from Wayne State University school of Medicine. The Dean's Scholarship Committee will select the recipient of the award based on scholastic achievement, leadership qualities and volunteer service.

Thomas Batchelor, M.D. Endowed Scholarship Fund is available for any medical school student. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic achievement and demonstrated financial need.

Gerald J. Bernath M.D. Endowed Multi-Year Scholarship will be awarded to first year full time Wayne State University School of Medicine students based on their scholastic achievement, volunteer activities and leadership qualities. The scholarship is renewable provided the student remains in the top half of their class.

A.E & E.M. Bernstein Scholarship Fund

Anne V. and John G. Bielawski, M.D. Endowed Student Scholarship is available to all Wayne State University School of Medicine students who are in good standing and who demonstrate financial need. Award may be used for tuition and other educational expenses. Recipients must re-apply and be re-evaluated in order to retain scholarship.

The Black Medical Association of Wayne State University Endowed Grant Fund is available to any Year I, II and III medical school students. A personal statement describing their financial need or emergency situation is required. Preference is given to applicants of African-American descent.

The Louis C. and Edith Blumberg Endowed Memorial Multi-Year Scholarship Fund will be awarded to full time first year Wayne State University School of Medicine students that reside in Greater Metropolitan Detroit. Recipient selection is based on scholastic achievement, financial need and leadership qualities.

William R. and Mary-Jean Bristol Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to any full time Wayne State University School of Medicine student who demonstrates financial need. The scholarship is renewable provided student continues to meet all criteria. Recipients must re-apply.

DeWitt T. Burton, M.D. Memorial Endowed Scholarship is available to all Wayne State University School of Medicine students. Scholarship is renewable provided all required criteria is met. Must re-apply annually. Preference will be given to applicants of African American descent.

William J. Cassidy Endowed Scholarship Fund is available for all full time Wayne State University School of Medicine students who demonstrate financial need and on the basis of scholastic achievement and leadership qualities.

Community Champions Scholarship will be awarded to half-time students at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. The award may be used for tuition and all other educational expenses or fees including living expenses.

David S. Diamond will be awarded to a full time Wayne State University School of Medicine student. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic achievement, must demonstrate financial need and leadership qualities.

Faculty Scholars Endowment Fund will be awarded to first year, full-time students accepted for study at the School of Medicine . Recipients will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, volunteer activities, and qualities of leadership by the Dean's Scholarship Committee. The scholarship will be awarded for all four years, providing the student maintains a level of academic performance which places him/her in the top half of the class.

The Jack P. Fink M.D. and Florence W. Fink Endowed Scholarship for Medical Students will be available for full time Year 1 medical students on the basis of scholastic achievement, volunteer activities and leadership qualities. The scholarship will be awarded for all four years, providing the student maintains a level of academic performance which places him/her in the top half of the class.

C. Jackson France, M. D. will be awarded to full time first year medical students who demonstrate leadership qualities, scholastic achievement and community service. The scholarship is renewable providing the student remains in the top half of their class.

Robert C. Fraser, M.D. Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to full-time students enrolled or accepted for study in the School of Medicine which may be used for tuition and other educational expenses. Students expressing an interest in Ophthalmology may be given preference for this award, but an expressed interest in Ophthalmology is not a required condition for receiving this scholarship.

Alfred & Hanna Fromm Scholarship Fund will be awarded to applicants on the basis of academic achievement and must demonstrate financial need. Recipients secondary must have been received in the United States.

Dr. Parker G. Gamble will be awarded to any medical school student who is in good academic standing.

Doris J Giddey Scholarship Fund will be awarded to Year 1 medical students who are Michigan residents. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic achievement and must demonstrate financial need. Recipients may retain this award provided they are in good standing.

Sam and Yetta Gonik Endowed Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a full time medical school student, of Jewish descent, if possible. The student must be good academic standing and demonstrate financial need. Recipients may retain this award provided they are in good standing.

Emanuel Graff Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund will be awarded to Year IV medical students in good standing who have a strong interest in a residency in cancer research or oncology. Recipients will be selected by the chair of the Department of Internal Medicine.

Michael A. Harris Sr. Annual Scholarship will be awarded to a full time medical student who has financial need. Awards may be used for tuition and other education expenses. Recipients may retain this award provided they continue to meet all criteria, but renewal is not automatic. Recipients must apply and be re-evaluated in order to retain this award.

John E. Hauser, M.D. Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded to a full time rising Year IV medical student on the basis of scholastic achievement, financial need and an interest in surgery.

Theophilus & Pearline Hawkins Endowed Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a full time Year II, III or IV medical student. Preference will be given to female applicants of African American descent.

James C. Hazlett, Jr., Ph.D. Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to full time Year 1 medical students to be used for tuition and other educational expenses.

Lyle Heavner M.D. Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded to Year 1 full time medical students on the basis of scholastic achievement, volunteer activities and leadership qualifications. Recipients may retain this award provided they continue to meet all criteria, but renewal is not automatic.

Genevieve Hitchman Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded to full time Year 1 medical based on academic achievement, volunteer activities and leadership qualities. Recipients may retain this award provided they continue to meet all criteria, but renewal is not automatic.

Thomas and Ada Lillian Hitchman Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded to full time Year 1 medical based on academic achievement, volunteer activities and leadership qualities. Recipients may retain this award provided they continue to meet all criteria, but renewal is not automatic.

Norris Hitchman and Vivilore H. Hitchman will be awarded to a Year 1 full time medical student. Recipients will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, volunteer activities, and qualities of leadership.

Shivappa V. Hulbanni, M.D. Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded to a Year I, II, III or IV medical student. Recipients must reside in either Oakland , Wayne or Macomb county.

Samuel D. Indenbaum Endowed Scholarship Fund for Medical Students will be awarded to Year II, III and IV medical students. Students must have demonstrated a more than satisfactory academic record during his/her first year of medical school and have financial need. Awards may be used for tuition and other educational expenses. Recipients may retain this award provided they continue to meet all required criteria, but renewal of this award is not automatic. Recipients must re-apply and be re-evaluated in order to retain award.

Max Kahn Educational Fund

Molly Kantor-Sam Corel Endowed Scholarship

Saul Karch M.D. Endowed Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a full time medical student. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic achievement and must demonstrate financial need.

The Richard F. Kuhn, M.D. Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded to a full time Year I medical student. Preference will be given to graduates of the University of Detroit . Recipients will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, volunteer activities, and leadership qualities.

Thomas & Mary Jane LaLonde Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to any Year I, II, III or IV medical student in good standing and must demonstrate financial need.

Joseph A. Liioi M.D. Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund will be awarded to any full time medical student, preferably a Michigan resident. Recipients will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, volunteer activities, and leadership qualities.

Edwin H. Lorentzen Endowed Scholarship

Robert J. Lucas, M.D. Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded a full time Year I Medical student on the basis of scholastic achievement, volunteer activities, and leadership qualities. Recipients may retain this award provided they continue to meet all required criteria.

Raymond R. Margherio Endowed Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a full time rising Year II medical student.

Joseph M. & Doris V. Markel Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded to a full time Year I medical school. Recipients will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, volunteer activities, and qualities of leadership.

The Frank Markey M.D. Endowed Scholarship will be awarded from full time Year II, III or IV medical students. Preference will be given to students of Hungarian descent that demonstrate financial need as defined by the School of Medicine . Awards may be used for tuition and other educational expenses. Recipients may retain this award provided they continue to meet all required criteria, but renewal of this award is not automatic. Recipients must re-apply and be re-evaluated in order to retain this award.

Frederick Maynard, M.D. and Mrs. Ruth Maynard Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to full-time and part-time graduate and undergraduate students accepted for study in the Wayne State University School of Medicine may apply for this scholarship. Recipients may use this award for tuition and other educational expenses. The scholarship is renewal provided they continue to meet all required criteria, but renewal of this award is not automatic. Recipients must re-apply and be re-evaluated in order to receive a renewal of this award.

Dr. Max Mattes Scholarship Fund will be awarded to a full time student or students accepted at the medical school. Recipients will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, volunteer activities, and qualities of leadership.

Theodore A. McGraw Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a rising Year IV medical student with outstanding academic qualifications.

Dr. John T. McHenry Memorial Fund will be awarded to a Year III medical student who has outstanding performance in the area of Neurology.

Herbert Mendelson Enthusiasm for Medicine Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to full time medical students who demonstrate financial need. The award can be used for tuition and other educational expenses. The scholarship is renewal provided they continue to meet all required criteria, but renewal of this award is not automatic. Recipients must re-apply and be re-evaluated in order to receive a renewal of this award.

Michigan Association of Physicians from India Annual Award will be awarded to a Year IV medical student with preference given to students with descendants from India . Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic excellence ranking in the top one-fourth of the graduating class. The award shall be used for tuition and other educational expenses.

Stanley G. Miner Memorial Scholarship Fund will be awarded to a full time medical student.

Gordon B. Myers Award in Internal Medicine (need provisions)  

James E. and Christine Orr Scholarship (Medicine) (need provisions)

Peace Award will be awarded to a current medical. A CV detailing peace activities (past, current) must be submitted, as well as an essay concerning some aspect of peace and doctors.

Penfil-Tischler Endowed Award will be awarded to a Year IV medical student recognized by his or her classmates for displaying care and understanding to patients during his or her years of clinical studies. All members of the senior class are eligible for nomination or to make nominations for this award.

Karl G. Pinkard Scholarship Fund

Prentis Foundation

The Dorothy and Charles A. Pokriefka, Sr. Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded to a Year III or Year IV medical student, preferably a male of Polish descent. Recipients will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement as well as financial need.

Milton M. Ratner Scholarship Endowed Fund will be awarded to a Year I, II, III or IV medical student who demonstrates need.

Robert W. Rinkel, M.D. Endowed Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a full time rising Year III or Year IV medical student, based on their scholastic achievement and financial need. The scholarship is not renewable.

Arthur J. Roberts, M.D. Memorial Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time medical student on the basis of scholastic achievement and financial need.

Earl and Anne Saxe Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to a full time medical student who demonstrate financial need. Recipients may retain this award provided they continue to meet all required criteria, but renewal of this award is not automatic.

The Harold K. Schillinger, M.D. Memorial Scholarship Fund in Medicine will be awarded to full-time students medical students or those students accepted to study at Wayne State University School of Medicine. Recipients will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, qualities of character, leadership and financial need.

School of Medicine Dean's Academic Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded to full time Year I medical students on the basis of scholastic achievement, community service and leadership qualities. Recipients may retain this award provided they continue to meet all required criteria.

School of Medicine Academic Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded to full-time Year I medical students on the basis of scholastic achievement, volunteer activities and qualities of leadership by the Dean's Scholarship Committee. The scholarships will be awarded for all four years, providing the student maintains a level of academic performance which places him/her in the top half of the class.

Wayne R. Scott M.D. and Louise A. Scott will be awarded to a full time medical student . Recipients will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement and leadership abilities.

William S. Sells, Jr. Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded any medical student at the Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Stanely Shanoski,M.D. and Celia Shanoski Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to a full time rising Year III or IV medical student.

Dr. Farhad K. and Kathryn Shokoohi Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to a full time medical student on the basis of scholastic achievement and financial need.

IBN SINA Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded to any Year I, II, III and IV medical student, preferably of Arabic or Chaldean descent. Applicants must write an essay demonstrating the student's interest in the history of Arabic and Chaldean medicine and culture. Recipients will selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, volunteer activities and qualities of leadership

Sinai Medical Staff Foundation Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded to a full time Year I, II, III or IV medical students. Recipients will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement and must demonstrate financial need.

Dr. Wilbur J. and Myrne M. Steininger Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded to a full time Year I medical student on the basis of scholastic achievement, volunteer activities and leadership qualities. The scholarships will be awarded for all four years, providing the student maintains a level of academic performance which places him/her in the top half of the class.

August and Bertha May Stockmeyer Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded to a full time Year I medical student. Recipients will selected on the the basis of scholastic achievement, volunteer activities and qualities of leadership.

Joseph Taranto Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded to a full time Year I medical student on the basis of their scholastic achievement and financial need. The scholarship is to be used for tuition only.

Laura E. Timmis Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a full time medical student or a student accepted into the medical school. Preference will be given to a female student on the basis of scholastic achievement, leadership qualities and financial need.

Leonard F. VanRaaphorst, M.D. Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to an incoming Year I medical student to assist in payment for supplies, books and tuition. Recipients will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, leadership qualities and must reside in Wayne County . The scholarship is non-renewable.

Narayan Verma, M.D., “Promotion of Enthusiasm in Neurology as a Career in Medicine” Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to a Year I medical student with the highest score in Neuroscience. The scholarship is non-renewable.

Charles Vincent Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time Year I medical student who resides in Wayne , Oakland or Macomb counties. Applicants must demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to applicants of African American descent. The award shall be used for tuition only.

Clarence E. Weaver, M.D. & Mary Ann Tully Weaver Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded to full time incoming Year I medical students and will be selected on the basis of financial need and scholastic achievement once they are accepted.

Gertraud Wollschlaeger, M.D. Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded to full time Year I, II, III and IV medical students. Recipients will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement and financial need.

William C. Wyte, M.D. and Collette Ditz Wyte M.D. Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to full time Year I, II, III and IV medical students on the basis of scholastic achievement and demonstrated financial need.

Sri Yalgurdrao and Smt Ganga Kalukarni Endowed Scholarship Fund will be awarded to a Year I, II, III or IV medical student who resides in Wayne , Oakland or Macomb counties. Recipients will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement and financial need. The scholarship is to be used for tuition and other educational expenses.

The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Scholarship Program is a competitive Federal program which awards scholarships to students pursuing primary care health professions training.

National Medical Fellowships, Inc.
A program of grant assistance for Year I and II medical students from minority groups currently under-represented in medicine.
