Office of Student Financial Aid

Mission Statement:
The mission of the Office of Student Financial Aid is to provide access to financial resources in a fair, sensitive and confidential manner; to inform and educate students and their families about their financial options; and to continually improve our services so that students may take full advantage of their educational opportunities.

Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct:
The Wayne State University Office of Student Financial Aid follows the Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct as adopted by the National Association of Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA.)  To view the full document, click here.

While it is the primary responsibility of the student and family to cover the costs of education, there are financial assistance programs that can help ease the burden.  Through a combination of grants, work-study and loan programs, students are able to receive varying levels of funding.  The priority filing deadline is March 1st of each year.

In order to qualify for federal financial aid you must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen as described by the U.S. Department of Education (refer to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid Instructions).  If you are a male between the ages of 18-25, you must also register or have registered for Selective Service. Students that are in default on federal loan funds or owe repayments on grants are not eligible to receive aid.  Contact your lender, loan servicer, or the Department of Education (1-800-433-7327) for information on renewing eligibility.

International Students

International students do not meet the citizenship criteria to be eligible for financial aid from the U.S. Department of Education, but may apply for alternative loans through a variety of lenders. Some of these lenders may require a co-signer who is a credit-worthy U.S. Citizen or permanent resident. More information about these loan programs can be obtained at www.finaid.org under "Students". Canadian students may obtain student loan information by visiting the Ontario Student Assistance Programs Web site at http://osap.gov.on.ca.

Types of Financial Aid

Financial aid programs have varying award conditions, eligibility criteria, dollar amounts and continuation requirements. Some financial aid programs are need-based. Other financial aid programs are merit-based and provide funds in recognition of special skills, talents or academic ability. It is customary to group financial aid programs by type of aid:

Grants and Scholarships - gift assistance that requires no repayment and is usually based on need, academic achievement or special talent.

Loans - money repayable with interest at a future date, usually following graduation or when you cease to be enrolled on at least a half-time basis.

Employment - a job on or off campus; a direct exchange of money for work performed.

More information about these types of assistance can be found at awarding of aid, selected scholarship programs, and loan programs.
