2011-12 ESTIMATED COST OF ATTENDANCE
The Cost of Attendance reflects the average, estimated expenses to attend medical school at WSU for one year. Costs cannot be added for expenses incurred by a family member other than the student unless they are necessary daycare costs. See “Exceptions to Cost of Attendance” below.
Tuition and Fee Charges: Tuition and omnibus fees are charged on a per-credit-hour basis (effective 2008-09.)
- Full time = 24 to 50 credits
- Half Time = 12 to 23 credits
The initial Cost of Attendance assumes 50 credit hours for full time students, and 23 credits for modified/half time students.
Adjustments will be made to reflect actual enrollment after registration.
Health Insurance Coverage:
Health insurance coverage is mandatory for all medical students, and proof of coverage must be submitted to the WSU School of Medicine Office of Records/Registration at the time students register.
Students may purchase the health insurance plan offered through the WSU SoM or submit proof of coverage through a parent/spouse.
Health insurance premiums will be added on an individual basis to the Cost of Attendance.
The total amount of a student’s financial aid award cannot exceed the Cost of Attendance.

Exceptions to Cost of Attendance:
Necessary expenses such as daycare costs, emergency car repairs, medical/dental bills in excess of the $350 annual allowance and not covered by insurance, and the one-time purchase of a computer, may be added to the Cost of Attendance if incurred during the academic year. Students must request consideration for a Cost of Attendance increase by submitting a written request and supporting documentation of paid expenses to the Office of Student Financial Aid. Please go to our “Forms” page to download a “Cost of Attendance Increase Request” form.
* Tuition Rates reflect ESTIMATED 2.9% increase for 2011-12 per-credit-hour over 2010-11 rates. Omnibus, Student Support, and Fitness Center Fee Rates are ESTIMATED at the same levels as 2010-11 rates. All Tuition and Fee Rates are subject to revision and approval by the Wayne State University Board of Governors. Initial financial aid awards are based on estimated rates and assumed enrollment of 50 credit hours for full time and 23 credit hours for half time. Adjustments to rates and changes in enrollment status can impact the Cost of Attendance and result in recalculations of financial aid eligibility, award amounts, and disbursement dates and amounts.
