Year IV International Health Electives

Wayne State University medical students have the opportunity to travel and study abroad for international electives.  Many students often travel to developing nations. Medical students are prepared to be responsible for taking care of patients with multiple needs in whatever socioeconomic group or culture they may be from, the students describe the International Health Elective as a very significant, expansive experience.

The International Away Elective Contact Book is available to read in Student Affairs, Suite 315, Richard J. Mazurek, MD Medical Education Commons.  The book lists Continent, County, Name of Elective, Contact Information and Student Website at http://www.med.wayne.edu/student_affairs/index.asp, under forms.

Guidelines (Complete International Checklist)

  • Medical students are required to be in good academic standing.
  • Determine the field-medical specialty of the elective.
  • The setting, urban or rural
  • The locale, hospital or clinic
  • Your level of language proficiency
  • Review guidelines for personal health and travel of health professionals working in developing countries. Review the CDC website www.cdc.gov.
  • The period of time you have available
  • Housing needs and financial resources at your disposal
  • Review "Creative Funding for International Health Electives," International Health Medical Education Consortium. (Available in Student Affairs).
  • Review Student/Study/Internship Outside the U.S. Grant Program.  (Wayne State University, Office for Global Education, 4092 Faculty Administration Building, Detroit, Michigan 48202.
  • For approval: Department of Internal Medicine: Dr. Liborio Tranchida, M.D.  Faculty Director of International Health Systems, Associate Chair, Internal Medicine, University Health Center (UHC), 2E.

Overseas Elective Policies & Procedures
The following criteria must be met for an overseas elective to be eligible for academic credit by the department at Wayne State University:

  1. The coordinator is certified by the specialty board in which the elective is being offered, or its equivalent.
  2. The coordinator spends the majority of his/her time in the specialty which is being offered as an elective.
  3. The coordinator must have provided the University with a curriculum vitae (CV).
  4. The elective course must be described in detail.
  5. All overseas electives are to be done in university hospitals in professorial units.
  6. A training program in that specialty or sub-specialty must be in progress at that institution.

After completing Steps 1-6, come to Student Affairs to see your counselor. The process may take several months to complete so make sure to start early.

ALL MEDICAL STUDENTS registered for International Health Electives OR participating in International Relief Missions

Please provide the following information to the Office of Student Affairs no later than 30 days before you depart.

  • COMPLETED “SENIOR AWAY ELECTIVE ” FORM, signed by Dr. Tranchida, 313-745-8212
    (REQUIRED for Senior Electives only…. NOT Mission Trips)
  • COMPLETED “TRAVEL AUTHORIZATION AND EXPENSE REPORT” FORM
    (REQUIRED for Mission Trips with Reimbursements)
  • A copy of your Passport.
  • Proof of Travel Insurance. (Copy of policy and/or card.) If you do not have any travel insurance, it can be purchased at www.travelguard.com
    Your current standard medical insurance most probably does not cover international travel adequately and rarely covers repatriation.
  • Copy of Airline Ticket Receipt – Receipt must include; your name, eticket #, AND payment method
    ( i.e. check, cash, charge) in the case of Relief Missions requiring reimbursement.
  • Emergency Contact List – (Parents/Spouse/Significant Other….) Provide the following information for each person that you are listing; Name(s), Address, City/State/Zip, Phone Numbers: (home), (business), (mobile) and e-mail address.
  • Contact information of the place/person that you will be working with during your International elective. Provide the following information for each person that you are listing; Name(s), Address, City/State/Zip, Phone Numbers: (home), (business), (mobile) and e-mail address.
  • ALL MEDICAL STUDENTS, traveling abroad for electives or participating in international relief missions, are required to sign, with witness signatures, the University Travel Waiver, available in the Office of Student Affairs.
  • ALL MEDICAL STUDENTS assigned to International electives, or participating in international relief missions, are required to register with the United States, Department of State.

THESE REQUIREMENTS ARE MANDATORY FOR ALL YEAR IV INTERNATIONAL ELECTIVES AND STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN INTERNATIONAL RELIEF MISSIONS.
