Entering Students

Entering students are required to have a complete physical examination, laboratory tests and immunizations performed by their personal physicians prior to matriculation.

School of Medicine Policy

If you are ill, you need to report to Detroit Medical Center, Occupational Health Clinic (OHS) clinic registration located at 4D of University Health Center.  You will be examined by a health care clinician in the (OHS) clinic, 4K-UHC.  The fee for this service is $25.00 that will be billed to your health insurance provider or directly to you.

Student Affairs will promote and enhance medical student personal health and wellness.  Confidential mental health services are available to medical students.  Referrals to health care providers, our stress management workshops and individual special health care needs are available through the Office of Student Affairs.  Consultations to physicians are available and a wide variety of services are available through Outpatient Services.

Medical Student Prevention Programs Related to Exposure to Patients with Infectious Diseases

Medical students are health care providers in training.  Medical students will have direct contact with patients beginning in the first year of medical school.  It is recognized that health care providers, including medical students, are at special risk for acquiring infectious diseases.  Infection with airborne pathogens such as Mycobacterium Tuberculosis (TB) and blood borne pathogens such as Hepatitis B, C and HIV can be largely prevented.  Prevention services are offered at a reduced price to medical students.

TB Control Program

The TB control program follows CDC recommendations.  Medical students, as health care workers, are considered a high-risk population if they practice in a geographic area with TB in the general population.  The Detroit metropolitan area does have TB in the general population, therefore, students may be exposed to infected patients.

Recombinant Hepatitis Vaccine

All students are strongly encouraged to be immunized against Hepatitis B.  Recombinant HB hepatitis vaccine is available through Detroit Medical Center, Occupational Health Services (OHS), 4K-UHC.  To be immunized, the students sign up during registration for the series of inoculations.  The current charge is $168.00 or $56.00 per immunization.  Students who decline immunization must sign a "Declination Form".

Accidental Exposure to Hepatitis or HIV Infection

In general, students accidentally exposed to body fluids or patients with hepatitis or HIV infection, or at high risk for these conditions, should report to the appropriate (OHS) Occupational Health Service of the concerned hospital during normal working hours or to the Emergency Room of that hospital after normal working hours.  Appropriate blood tests will be drawn and treatment given if indicated.
