Student Interest Groups
Departmental Faculty chair these specialty interest groups giving
students the opportunity to work hands-on with a staffed physician
in their chosen field. The departments assist in arranging lunchtime
lectures to give students a better understanding of a specialty medical
profession.
Anesthesiology Interest Group (AIG)
The Anesthesiology Interest Group, founded in 2002, is for all
medical students (years I - IV). The primary goal of the AIG is to
educate and expose students to the field of Anesthesiology. In addition,
the group looks to foster an increased interest in the field. Students
will have opportunities to interact with, and learn from, practicing
physicians and residents. Topics covered will include defining the
role of the Anesthesiologist, daily life, the future of the profession,
associated sub-specialties, as well as, residency and match. All interested
are encouraged to join.
Cardiology Interest Group
To promote student interest in the field of Cardiology.
Emergency
Medicine Interest Group (EMIG)
The Emergency Medicine Interest Group is for students (Years I-IV)
interested in exploring emergency medicine as a career choice. This
group was formed to provide an avenue of educational outreach and
experience in emergency medicine and health care in general. It provides
an opportunity to make contacts in the field and to gain some clinical
experience before beginning Year III.
Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG)
FMIG is a group for students interested in primary care. FMIG sponsors
speakers on topics which are not currently taught in most conventional
medical curricula, such as; Nutrition, Consumer Health Education,
Occupational Health and Managed Care. Potluck dinners involving students,
faculty, and guest speakers bring people with similar interests together.
Internal Medicine Interest Group (IMIG)
The IMIG gives students an opportunity to learn about the field of
Internal Medicine during the pre-clinical first and second years.
The Internal Medicine Interest Group provides students with opportunities
to meet with practicing internal medicine physicians and residents,
and educates the students about career choices in internal medicine.
Neurology
Interest Group (SIGN)
The Student Interest Group in Neurology (SIGN) brings
together medical students who are interested in exploring the practice
of neurology. Additional focus is placed on the basic and clinical
neuroscience research that underlies continued development within
the discipline. The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) supports each
SIGN chapter along with the Neurology department of each member's
institution. SIGN member benefits include: 1) first hand experience,
2) shadowing a neurologist, 3) being matched with a mentor, 4) attending
seminars, 5) meeting professors, 6) meeting attendings and residents
and 7) summer research grants.
OB/GYN Interest Group
This interest group established in 1996 seeks to familiarize medical
students about career choices in OB/GYN and its sub-specialties. The
focus is to provide Year I and Year II medical students opportunities
and experience through informal hospital rotations and to serve as
a networking resource regarding residency opportunities available
to students considering OB/GYN as their career choice.
Pediatric Care Interest Group
Formed in 1995, this interest group seeks to educate medical students
about career opportunities in pediatric medicine and its specialties.
The group provides to the student body information on community organizations
and outreach programs that help children in the metro Detroit area
and seek assistance from medical students.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Interest Group
To promote student interest in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Psychiatry and Neuroscience Interest Group
Formed in 1995, this interest group seeks to educate medical students
about the career opportunities in psychiatry. The group provides to
the student body information on mental health services in the metro
Detroit area.
Radiology Interest Group
Established in the spring of 1996, the Radiology Interest Group focuses
on developing programs and activities designed to promote interest
in radiology as a career choice and fostering an understanding of
the relationship between radiology and the primary care fields.
Rural Medicine Interest Group
The Rural Medicine Interest Group (RMIG) was established in conjunction with the Rural Medicine Curriculum Grant Project to provide students, who are considering eventual rural-based practice, the educational opportunities and professional guidance they will need to make that critical decision.
The Surgery Interest Group
The goal of The Surgery Interest Group is to introduce Year I and
Year II students to the field of surgery and its associated sub-specialties.
This is achieved through clinical lectures presented by various physicians,
clinical visits by students and opportunities to observe surgical
procedures in the operating room. The club provides those students
who are interested in pursuing the field of surgery with information
that could help them in their pursuit. The primary goal of the club
is to provide information that will be beneficial to students enabling
them to make well-researched specialty choice decisions.
The Wilderness Medicine Student Interest Group (WMSIG)
The Wilderness Medicine Student Interest Group was established with
support from the Wilderness Medical Society to promote education in
and exposure to wilderness medicine. Medical situations exist that are
unique to the wilderness due to the degree of isolation and lack of
medical and safety principles essential to the outdoor enthusiast. The
WMSIG provides an opportunity for members to gain an appreciation for
these issues through workshops, activities, and outings. |
