Counseling
Advising
The counselors advise and facilitate the students’
ability to integrate and manage the academic and personal demands
of medical school.
Career Guidance
The Office of Student Affairs offers a variety of
services and resources to assist SOM students in career planning.
CAREERS IN MEDICINE is an AAMC based program which is available to
students throughout medical school. This program includes a web site
that contains many resources for medical students to explore career
opportunities. Later in medical school the PATHWAYS PROGRAM is available.
This program offers students a decision making model especially relevant
as the Electronic Residency Application Service is entered during
Year IV. The Office of Student Affairs assists students in the NATIONAL
RESIDENCY MATCH PROGRAM as well as the San Francisco Match and the
Urology Matching Program. The Office of Student Affairs provides
a computer lab, dedicated to medical students entering the MATCH.
Individual guidance around career planning is also available through
the Office of Student Affairs.
Personal
Counseling
As a medical student, you are required to master
a large body of knowledge and clinical skills. It can be difficult
to balance these professional demands with the realities of your personal
life. The Office of Student Affairs is staffed by professional counselors
who are committed to promoting the academic, personal and professional
development of medical students. Students frequently seek assistance
with a wide range of issues including:
- Academic difficulties
- Career planning
- Stress management and time management
- Anxiety and depression
- Problems in relationships with family, peers, and faculty
- Personal and professional identity issues
- Loss and bereavement
We encourage students to seek early intervention
and supportive counseling in order to resolve these issues and maintain
the focus required to succeed in medical school. We also provide
referral to specialists.
Information
shared during counseling is confidential; it does not become part
