Acute Stroke StudiesThe stroke program participates in several multi-center clinical trials for the acute treatment of stroke. Several new neuroprotective medications are currently being tested to determine their safety and efficacy in patients with acute stroke. Additionally, new methods of treatment with thrombolytic medications ("clot-busters") are being investigated. Most acute stroke studies require that patients be treated within 24 hours of their stroke. Most studies have shorter time limits (i.e. 6-8 hours). As always, it is important to seek medical care as soon as any stroke symptoms occur. Currently, the "clot buster," tPA can been given to patients with certain types of stroke, if the patient can be evaluated within 3 hours of the onset of the stroke. If you or someone you know has symptoms of stroke, please obtain medical care as soon as possible. If you live near the Detroit Receiving Hospital, come to the Emergency Room as soon as possible to be evaluated by our stroke team. You may qualify to participate in one of our experimental trials for acute stroke. Studies with Open Enrollment
