Emergency medicine residents use skills outside ER
Emergency medicine residents are accustomed to saving lives in the familiar area of the emergency room, but two Detroit Medical Center doctors found themselves applying their skills in a Las Vegas casino in October, 1999. Dr. Chin Tang, a third-year resident, and Dr. Abhinav Chandra, a fifth-year resident, were at a conference of the American College of Emergency Physicians when they found a man lying unconscious at Caesars Palace. Casino employees located an automatic external defibrillator, and Drs. Tang and Chandra were able to revive the man’s heart and save his life. "Quick thinking is an important skill for physicians," said Brooks Bock, MD, professor and chair of emergency medicine. "We are happy that our residents and physicians are well-trained and able to take charge when the situation calls for immediate action."
