1939
Sidney Lane, MD,
retired in June after 49 years in general surgery. His achievements include being past assistant clinical professor at UCLA and emeritus attending staff at LS Co. Harbor/UCLA Hospital. He says, “My best wishes to remaining classmates. Retirement is wonderful, except time goes at warp speed.”

1943
Marjorie Peebles-Meyers, MD,
has been honored by the Wayne State University School of Medicine as a Pathfinder in Medicine. She is one of four people to be honored for their promotion of equality and diversity in the Detroit medical community.

1954
Robert Borchak, MD,
has been named president of the Wayne County Medical Association, effective May 31, 2000.

1964
Janette Sherman, MD,
has written a book called “Life’s Delicate Balance: Causes and Prevention of Breast Cancer.” Dr. Sherman specializes in internal medicine in Alexandria, Va., and she is particularly interested in evaluating illnesses involving chemical and readiation exposure. Richard Goodell, MD,
was chosen as one of the Top Doctors in the Valley in neurology by Phoenix Magazine. The magazine compiled a list of the best doctors in Arizona, using a number of different sources and measures. Dr. Goodell practices in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Dennis Armstrong, MD,

Shara Peets, MD,
is rejoining the primary care staff at Genesis HealthCare of New York. She left Genesis three years ago to work for North Jefferson Health Systems, but has since returned.

Allan Smiley, MD,
of the Poughkeepsie Medical Group in New York, has been elected a fellow of the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine.

1977
Bruce Deschere, MD,
has been certified in sports medicine and has been selected as an international/world physician by the United States Figure Skating Association. In March, he and several WSU residents provided medical coverage for the 2000 Chevrolet Synchronized Team Skating Championship in Plymouth, Mich.

Stephen Beals, MD,

John Hamill, Jr., MD, has been promoted to associate clinical professor of dermatology at the University of South Florida, where he had been director of advanced dermatological surgery for the past five years. He is also the current president of the Florida West Coast Society for Dermatology and is president-elect of the Florida Society of Dermatological Surgeons. Dr. Hamill sub-specialized in skin cancer treatment and is board certified in Mohs Micrographic Surgery, as well as dermatology. He is married to Sue and has four children. He also has a private practice and is actively involved with indigent clinics in Paco and Hernando Counties.

1983
Kathleen Kennedy, MD,
is chief of staff of Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, Fla., which has 601 active physicians on staff. She is also a diplomate of the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians and has a private internal medicine practice. Dr. Kennedy is involved in a new project with the Sarasota Geriatric Inititative, which is sponsored by the Hartford Foundation for the Early Detection of Alzheimer’s Disease. This is a new program to teach primary care physicians to detect early Alzheimer’s.

1986
David Spain, MD,
is an associate professor of surgery at the University of Louisville. He is also director of surgical critical care and vice chief of staff at the University of Louisville Hospital.

1990
Henry Randall, MD,
will become an assistant professor, practicing adult and pediatric liver and kidney transplants at the University of Louisville. He will head up the living-related liver transplant program and enhance the hepato-biliary service. He says, “The 10 years of training was well worth the wait.”

1991
Lori Fedoronko, MD,
completed a three-year internal medicine residency at Dartmouth, then another three-years in dermatology at Wayne State University. She is board certified in dermatology and recently purchased a solo dermatology practice in Troy, Mich. She says she still does distance running and plays lots of tennis.

1992
Jeffrey Lord, MD,
will complete his surgery residency as well as eight years of military service in July 2000. He will transfer from Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va. to the Naval Medical Center in Guam to head the surgery department there. He will be joined by his wife Kelly and his children, Zach and Abby. Joseph Kochan, MD, ’92, says, “He will certainly be missed by both his patients and the staff at Portsmouth Naval Hospital.”

1993
Amir Bacchus, MD,
and his wife Colleen live in Las Vegas with their three daughters: Lauren, Riahna and Hannah. Since leaving Detroit, Dr. Bacchus has become CEO of a 20-physician internal medicine practice and he helped create a 500-member IPA for which he is medical director and vice president. He also established a mobile medical diagnostic business that operates in three states.

Ruthann Cunningham, MD, married Phil Gray in November 1994. She left a general surgery residency at RPSLMC in Chicago during her fourth year to do emergency medicine at Cook County. She is now finishing her seventh and final year of training and will be moving to Chicago’s north shore. She asks, “Wendy, are you still there?” ruthannc@hotmail.com

Robert Lipsitz, MD, married Kimiko Iwaya of Emukae-cho, Japan, on May 1. He is currently practicing family medicine at the United States Naval Hospital in Yokosuka, Japan. In October, he will begin working for the Navy’s Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in Washington, D.C.

1995
Whitney David, MD,
completed her general surgery residency in June. This summer, she, her husband and two cats will move to Senoma/Cottonwood, Ariz. She says, “I hope all of you are doing well, chasing your dreams.”

1999
Andrew Gilbert, a first-year resident at the University of Pittsburgh, was named an American Institute for Research and Education scholar and fellow. He had a paper published in the May 2000 issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry.
