The annual Wayne State University Medical Student Research Symposium held in January awarded the following students for excellence in research.

In the poster presentation, first prize went to Ashish Sharma who presented "Expression and Chromosomal Localization of Genes Expressed in the Retina and Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE)." Second prize went to Karl Ilg for his work on "Dietary Magnesium Supplementation Restored Endothelium-Independent Rat Aorta Vasorelaxation in Chronic Ethanol Exposure."

In the oral presentation, first prize went to Kate Dimond Fitzgerald for her presentation on "Spectroscopic Imaging in Pediatric Obsessive Compulsive Disorder." Theodore Barber took second prize for his work on "Isolation of a Potential Effector of the Novel Ras Family Protein Rad Using the Yeast Two-Hybrid System."

Sharma and Fitzgerald then represented Wayne State University at the National Medical Student Research Forum in Galveston, Texas. Here, Fitzgerald was the winner of the American Medical Association Award for Excellence in Clinical Research. She also received The University of Texas Medical Branch Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Award.

Fitzgerald’s faculty sponsor, Dr. David Rosenberg, said, "Kate Fitzgerald represents the very best in our medical students--at the intellectual and clinical forefront. Her work is truly cutting edge and she has taken it to a new level. But she has done more than study obsessive compulsive disorder. She has gotten to know these patients and their families on a person-to-person level. We believe that she is someone who has the potential to become a leader in our field."
