Honors

Louis Caragine, MD, a PhD student in physiology and neurosurgery, received the 1998 Galbraith Award of the Section of Cerebrovascular Surgeons of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. His research focused on "Real-Time Glutamate Release Into and Removal from the Extracellular Space During No-Flow and Low-Flow Rat Forebrain Ischemia."

Harry Chugani, MD, professor of pediatrics, neurology and radiology, has been invited to become a member of the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives. He is the fourth person from the state of Michigan to join the alliance.

Miechia Esco, MD/PhD student, was awarded an Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) / National Eye Institute Fellowship grant to attend the annual ARVO meeting in Florida in May. She was selected from more than 800 applicants for her research regarding "Effects of Hypoxia on Human Corneal Cell-Cell and Cell-Matrix Adhesion." She currently works in the lab of Dr. Michelle Kurpakus, assistant professor of anatomy.

Andy Gilbert, Year IV medical student, received a young investigator award from the International Congress of Schizophrenia Research and will be presenting a poster at their annual scientific meeting.

Thomas Kuhn, MD, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences, was honored with the American Psychiatric Association’s 10th annual Nancy C.A. Roseske Award for Excellence in Medical Student Education.

Harvey Pass, MD, professor of surgery, was selected as one of the Top Cancer Doctors by Good Housekeeping magazine.

William Peters, MD, PhD, associate dean for cancer programs, was selected as one of the Top Cancer Doctors by Good Housekeeping magazine.

Ananda Prasad, MD, PhD, professor of internal medicine, has been awarded an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Lyon.

David Rosenberg, MD, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences, was honored with a 1998 Award for Leadership and Teaching in Continuing Medical Education from the WSU School of Medicine.

Maryjean Schenk, MD, interim chair of family medicine, has been accepted as a member of the 1999-2000 class of fellows in the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program for Women.

Arun Wakade, PhD, professor of pharmacology, has been selected by the Wayne State University Board of Governors to be honored as a Charles H. Gershenson Distinguished Faculty Fellow.
