"I don’t really think there ought to be differences between male and female students. Everybody should be treated well," said Anna Ledgerwood, MD, who served as the keynote speaker at the 1999 Gender Equity Awards program at the WSU School of Medicine.

This year’s honored Gender Equity Award winners were: Dr. Lavoisier Cardozo, associate professor of internal medicine; Dr. Scott Dulchavsky, associate professor of surgery; and Dr. Daniel Visscher, associate professor of pathology. Medical students chose these faculty members for being committed to the principles of equality and respect for all individuals.

"Just having a diverse school isn’t enough. The school has an obligation to create a welcoming, friendly, healthy environment [for all]," said Robert Frank, MD, associate dean for academic and student programs. Program coordinators from Wayne State’s American Medical Women’s Association said they were especially pleased with this year’s honorees and for the interest they have shown students in developing their medical careers.
