American Cancer Society, Inc. - Research Project Grants (RPG)

Support is provided to junior investigators within eight years of their first independent research or faculty appointment for research related to the control of cancer or research that benefits cancer patients. DEADLINES: April 1 and October 15

Burroughs-Wellcome Fund - Career Awards in the Biomedical Sciences

This program fosters the development and productivity of U.S. and Canadian postdoctoral researchers in the biomedical sciences, including reproductive science. These six year awards are intended to support advanced postdoctoral years and the first three years of faculty service. Usually 18 awards are made, half to Ph.D.'s and half to M.D. or M.D./Ph.D.'s. Since an institution, including the medical school, may nominate up to six candidates, the program is usually advertised and only in the event of more than the allowed number of candidates will a screening process be used. DEADLINE: October 1

Burroughs-Wellcome - New Investigator Awards in the Pharmacological and Toxicological Sciences

Candidates are M.D's or Ph.D's who have been appointed within three years of the November 2 application deadline to a tenure-track position as an assistant professor or its equivalent. Only two candidates may represent the University, including the Medical School, one in toxicological sciences and one in pharmacological sciences. Awards are $65,000/year for three years. An internal screening process will determine the candidate(s) most suitable to represent the University. DEADLINE: November 1

Camille & Henry Dreyfus Foundation - New Faculty Awards Program

This award is for only faculty members who are due to start their first full-time tenure-track appointments in the year of nomination and are in chemistry, chemical engineering or biochemistry. Since no more than one nomination per institution is allowed, an announcement by e-mail is sent to the appropriate departments, and an internal screening process is used to determine the most competitive candidate. DEADLINE: May 15

Camille & Henry Dreyfus Foundation - Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards Program

This program is designed to provide discretionary funding to faculty at early stages in their careers. The University may nominate one candidate who holds a full-time tenure-track academic appointment in chemistry, chemical engineering or biochemistry and is within the first five years of their academic career. Fifteen awards of $60,000 are made annually. There is an internal screening process to determine the most competitive candidate. DEADLINE: November 15

NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program

This program is for outstanding new faculty who intend to develop academic careers involving both research and education in the fields of basic science, mathematics, engineering or science education. Applicants must be employed at an institution in the U.S., be in their first or second full-time tenure-track academic appointment and have begun the first tenure-track or tenure-track equivalent appointment (at any institution) within the last four years. Awards are a minimum of $250,000 over a five-year period. DEADLINE: mid-July annually

ONR-Young Investigator Program

Support for scientists and engineers who have received Ph.D. degrees on or after December 1st five years prior to the deadline, and who show exceptional promise for doing creative research of interest to the Navy. They must be U.S. citizens, nationals or permanent residents holding tenure-track or permanent faculty positions. Awards are $100,000 per year for three years (with the possibility of greater support for equipment and/or to support additional, collaborative research with a Navy laboratory). DEADLINE: October 1

Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences

This program is designed to support young investigators of outstanding promise in the basic and clinical sciences relevant to the advancement of human health. It is open to individuals with a doctorate in medicine, other health related professions or biomedical sciences. As of November 1st of the deadline year, candidates must hold full time appointments at the rank of assistant professor or independent researcher on the faculty of the sponsoring institution. On July 1st of the award year, they must not have been in such an appointment for more than three years, whether or not such appointments were on a tenure track; time may have been spent at more than one institution. DEADLINE: November 1

Searle Scholars Program

Applications are invited from selected universities. Only two applications are accepted from an institution, including the Health Center. Candidates are independent research scholars in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, pharmacology and related areas in chemistry, medicine and the biological sciences who should have begun or will begin their first appointment at the assistant professor level on or after July 1st of the year before the deadline and therefore are in their first or second year of a tenure-track position. An internal screening process is used determine the candidates. DEADLINE: September 28
