University Psychiatric Centers – Sinai Grace Hospital

Consultation Liaison provides consultation to emergency department as well as medical and surgical units. We see about 180 patients per month, excluding follow-ups. We educate about 50 medical students per year, as well as 24 medical residents and 12 psychiatry residents. We also educate residents in neurology and other transitional specialties. Gerald Shiener M.D. is the Chief of the service and Mary Morreale M.D. and Claire Stroker M.D. also provide clinical services.

The Crisis Clinic serves as the psychiatry emergency room for Sinai Grace Hospital. Acutely ill psychiatric patients are evaluated, treated and linked to providers for ongoing care. Interaction with care providers occurs frequently. Patients are typically, initially seen in an emergent walk-in basis. Followup appointments are usually scheduled and provide a bridge to ongoing care. Patient diagnoses cover a wide variety of DSM IV conditions.

The Crisis Clinic utilizes attending physicians, resident physicians, nurses, and social workers in the treatment of patients. Medical, nursing, and physician assistant students are often in attendance. Ashok Shah M.D. is the Section Chief.

Inpatient Psychiatry Clinic is located in a 21-bed unit which employs a multidisciplinary treatment approach to patient care. The modalities to treatment may include medication management, individual psychotherapy, group therapy, occupational therapy, psychoeducational seminars, family meetings as well as a therapeutic milieu.

A daily morning report, treatment planning conferences, attending physician rounds and teaching conferences constitute a typical day on the unit. Inpatient grand rounds occur twice monthly.

The patient population is adult (18 +) and is drawn from the greater metropolitan Detroit area. Patients are referred for admission by their attending physicians, general medical/surgical floors of the hospital, psychiatric crisis clinic and the emergency department. There are both voluntary and court-ordered treatment patients on the unit. The diagnoses of admitted patients cover a wide variety of DSM-IV conditions.

The Inpatient unit utilizes attending physicians, resident physicians, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, and patient care assistants in the treatment of patients. Medical students are also in attendance. Clinical consultation from non-psychiatric medical specialists is available. Javaid Arrine M.D. is the Section Chief.

The Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic treats adult (18+) patients in an ongoing manner in an ambulatory setting. The patients are voluntary and come from diverse racial, ethnic, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds. Their diagnoses cover a wide variety of DSM IV conditions.

The Outpatient Clinic utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to treatment care. An array of mental health care professionals and modalities are available to treat the patient. Medication management, individual and group psychotherapy, psycho educational seminars and case management services may be utilized.

Treatment planning conferences, afternoon report and twice-weekly case discussions/ seminars are ongoing components of the unit.

The Outpatient Clinic utilizes attending physicians, resident physicians, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, and case managers in varying aspects of patient care. Medical students are also often present. John Dziuba M.D. is the Section Chief, and Leonard Lachover M.D. is the Associate Chief.
