Dr. Schoener is Professor of Pharmacology and Psychiatry. His academic life began with an intense interest in neurobiological mechanisms of abused drugs and, over the years, grew to include issues of psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, prevention and policy. He founded and for 16 years directed the Wayne State University Addiction Research Institute that conducted a wide range of basic and applied research on substance use problems. Having received an NIAAA/NIDA Career Teacher Award in Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Dr. Schoener has created a number of innovative education and training programs and has led Faculty Development programs in Substance Abuse for Medical and Public Health faculty at Wayne State, the University of Michigan and across the nation. He established and continues to direct the WSU interdisciplinary graduate Certificate program in Alcohol and Drug Abuse Studies (CADAS). His popular course on Drugs and the Addictive Process is a Core course for both CADAS and the BioMedical Sciences Masters program.

Statement of Interests:

Dr. Schoener’s interests have migrated over a noteworthy academic career from the laboratory to the clinic—from animal research on neurophysiological mechanisms of drug action to human investigation dedicated to improved intervention protocols. With a sustained focus on alcohol, opioids, cocaine and other psychotropic agents, he now conducts studies on treatment for people with chronic substance use problems. In fact, Dr. Schoener’s primary interest today is integrated treatment for persons with co-occurring substance use and severe persistent mental illness. The venue for much of his research is the community-based clinic, where he and his colleagues study questions related to the effectiveness and translation of intervention protocols known to be efficacious for this target population.
