Research:

Research Interests

Much of my research has focused on factors that affect the development of substance use disorders, particularly the physiological, behavioral, and subjective substrates of drug cue reactivity and craving as they relate to the maintenance of drug-taking behavior, and gender differences in physiological and behavioral responses to various substances (i.e., alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, and cocaine).  I am also interested in risk factors in the addictive process, such as family history of addiction, personality correlates, and psychiatric co-morbidity.  A more recent interest is in the neuropsychological and psychiatric sequelae of chronic MDMA, marijuana, and methamphetamine exposure.  Currently I am involved in developing laboratory models to test potential medications for treatment of cocaine and cannabis use disorders, and am starting to study the role of prenatal drug exposure in the development of adolescent substance use and other psychiatric disorders.

Research Support

“Cue Reactivity Model/Pharmacological. Intervention in Cannabis Use” (Leslie H. Lundahl, PI), Agency:  NIH/NIDA.   Funding Period: Sept, 2004 – July, 2006.  Purpose:  To develop and test a laboratory model of marijuana craving to test medications for use in treatment of marijuana abuse and dependence.

"Biobehavioral Studies of Opioid Drug-Seeking Behavior" (Mark Greenwald, PI), Agency:  NIH/NIDA. Funding period: September,        2003 – May, 2008. Purpose: Examine environmental factors that influence drug-seeking behavior in opioid-dependent humans.

“Reducing Cocaine/Heroin Abuse with SR-Amphetamine and Buprenorphine” (Mark Greenwald, PI), Agency:  NIH/NIDA. Fundingperiod:  September, 2006 – June, 2009.  Purpose:    To determine in cocaine/heroin-dependent volunteers whether maintenance on sustained release oral d-amphetamine with buprenorphine sublingual tablet is safe and well tolerated, decreases cocaine choice in a human laboratory polydrug abuse model (Study 1), and protects against relapse (Study 2).

“Bases of ADHD in Fetal Drug or Alcohol Exposure” (Malcolm Avison, PI: Sandra W. Jacobson, Site PI).  Agency:  NIH/NIDA.  Funding period:  Sept, 2005 – August, 2008.  Purpose:  1) To use fMRI to confirm that idiopathic, PNCE and PNAE ADHD subjects in this cohort have a functional impairment in fronto-striatal circuits, and that additional circuit dysfunctions contribute to behavioral deficits in PNAE; 2) To test the hypothesis that the circuit defect in PNCE ADHD is postsynaptic and therefore unresponsive to methylphenidate; 3) To use structural MRI and DTI to examine the contribution of structural abnormalities to the functional and behavioral deficits; 4)To identify the neural correlates of dyscalculia in PNAE subjects, and test their ability to distinguish PNAE- from idiopathic and PNCE-associated ADHD; 5) To test the hypothesis that prenatal exposure to alcohol or cocaine increases the risk of heavy episodic drinking during adolescence and that this increased risk is mediated by abnormalities in brain circuitry that are manifest in ADHD.

“Effect of Three Dose Ratios of Fentanyl and Naloxone in Opioid-Dependent Volunteers”  (Mark Greenwald, PI), contract with BioDelivery Sciences International Inc. Funding Period:  April, 2006 – June, 2007.  Purpose:  To determine the dose range over which IV naloxone administered in combination with IV fentanyl, would precipitate opioid withdrawal signs and symptoms and attenuate any pleasurable effects from intravenous fentanyl injection in subjects with a moderate level of opioid dependence.

“A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Multi-Center Study of Probuphine® in Patients with Opioid Dependence” (Mark Greenwald, site PI), contract with Titan Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Funding period:  January, 2007 – December, 2007. Purpose: To determine the safety and efficacy of a buprenorphine implant for treating opioid-dependent patients.
