Inpatient Psychiatry

Section Chief:  Javaid Arrine, M.D.
Sinai Grace Hospital

Clinical Overview
Inpatient Psychiatry Clinic is located in a 21-bed unit which employs a multidisciplinary treatment approach to patient care.  The modalities to treatment may include medication management, individual psychotherapy, group therapy, occupational therapy, psycho-educational seminars, family meetings as well as a therapeutic milieu.

A daily morning report, treatment planning conferences, attending physician rounds and teaching conferences constitute a typical day on the unit.  Inpatient grand rounds occur twice monthly.

The patient population is adult (18 +) and is drawn from the greater metropolitan Detroit area.  Patients are referred for admission by their attending physicians, general medical/surgical floors of the hospital, psychiatric crisis clinic and the emergency department.  There are both voluntary and court-ordered treatment patients on the unit.  The diagnoses of admitted patients cover a wide variety of DSM-IV conditions.

Treatment Team Composition
The Inpatient unit utilizes attending physicians, resident physicians, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, and patient care assistants in the treatment of patients.  Medical students are also in attendance.  Clinical consultation from non-psychiatric medical specialists is available.

Education and Training
The Inpatient unit serves as a training site for Wayne State University (WSU) psychiatry residents. Junior and senior level residents rotate onto the unit and handle varying levels of responsibility and patient care.

The unit also serves as a training site for the WSU Medical School’s Year III clerkships in psychiatry.
