Consultation Liaison Psychiatry

Section Chief:   Gerald Shiener, M.D.
Assistant Chief: Mary Morreale, M.D.
Sinai Grace Hospital

Clinical Overview
The Consultation Liaison (CL) psychiatry team interfaces with all units of the general medical hospital to address the psychiatric needs and treatments of hospitalized patients.  Diagnosis, symptom management, interaction with caregivers and disposition planning are all components of the treatment approach.  There are daily rounds with new and follow-up patients.

A wide variety of DSM IV psychiatric diagnoses are seen in the patients treated.

The team also undertakes an educational role with non-psychiatric medical personnel.  Discussions and seminars are held to educate medical colleagues about the unique aspects of caring for the medically ill.

Treatment Team Composition
The CL team is comprised of attending physicians, resident physicians, medical students and nurses.

Education and Training
Wayne State University (WSU) psychiatry residents rotate onto the CL service as part of their training.  Junior and senior level residents assume varying levels of responsibility and patient care.

The CL service also serves as a training site for the WSU Medical School Year III clerkship in psychiatry.

WSU residents in non-psychiatric specialties often choose the CL service as an elective rotation.
