President
of American Psychological Association to speak on clinical response to terrorism
The Wayne State University Department
of Psychology will host a lecture by Norine Johnson, PhD, president of the
American Psychological Association and a graduate of WSU’s doctoral program in
clinical psychology, on Friday, Oct. 19, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Bernath
Auditorium of the David Adamany Undergraduate Library. Johnson’s topic will be
“Psychology Responds to Trauma, Terror and War,” and is free and open to the
public.
Over
the course of her 30-year career, Dr. Johnson has demonstrated an unwavering
commitment and strong leadership to the service of psychology with initiatives
in professional practice, education and training and in public interest. An
assistant professor of neurology at the Boston University Medical School, she
chaired several committees within APA prior to becoming president. She has been
repeatedly honored for her service both to APA and to the Massachusetts
Psychological Association.
Joseph Jacobson, PhD, chair of the WSU
Department of Psychology, views the visit as important on several levels.
“This visit highlights our ongoing commitment to the preparation of
undergraduate and graduate students for careers in psychology and related
disciplines,” Dr. Jacobson said. “Not only is Dr. Johnson a nationally
prominent graduate of our WSU doctoral program, but she also provides leadership
to hundreds of thousands of clinical psychologists across the country.”
In addition to her full-time
independent practice and academic work in clinical psychology, Dr. Johnson has
established and manages four psychology-related businesses.
