WSU
seminar teaches young researchers to write more successful grants
With
the assistance of an educational grant from pharmaceutical manufacturer Pfizer,
the Wayne State University School of Medicine held its second highly successful
seminar on grant writing this past November.
The
seminar presenter, David C. Morrison, PhD, of Grant Writers’ Seminars and
Workshops, LLC, shares his grant writing expertise with researchers across the
country.
Coordinated
by the School’s Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs, Thomas W.
Uhde, MD, this session, entitled “Write Winning Grants,” was geared towards
newer researchers who have yet to be funded by the National Institutes of Health
(NIH).
The
office of the associate dean is in the process of reviewing feedback from the
seminar and will soon make decisions on future such events.
The
initial outlook is quite promising. As one attendee stated, “I cannot imagine
a more helpful, inspiring and knowledgeable presentation of grant writing
issues. I will certainly be thanking my chairman for sending me and
acknowledging Pfizer for their generosity in supporting this program.”
This
past spring, the associate dean’s office co-sponsored a similar presentation
with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Whereas that seminar focused
on WSU faculty members, the involvement of Pfizer allowed participants from the
surrounding five-state area to attend this most recent session.
In
addition to the 15 WSU faculty members in attendance, the November seminar
featured representatives from St. John Hospital and Medical Center, Medical
College of Ohio, Ohio State University, Case Western
Reserve University, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, University of Louisville, Henry
Ford Hospital, University of Pittsburgh, Michigan State University, University
of Kentucky, Indiana University School of Medicine and University of Cincinnati.
