Some of our favorite Michigan/Detroit places

Here, in the Department, we all have places that we have come to love in the Detroit metropolitan area and Michigan in general. Below we list some of these in no particular order.

Eastern Market, Detroit, MI

...I go most Saturdays pretty much year round and love every visit, from the flowers, asparagus and morels of early spring, to the cornucopia of fruits and vegetable of summer, the apples, pumpkins and squashes of fall and the local meats of winter. And it is fun, for it is a truly democratic market, with city hipsters shopping next to newly arrived Yemeni immigrants, and people seeking good food prices shopping side by side with some of the city's most commited foodies. It is great (and delicious) fun, do not miss it.

Cranbrook Institute of Science
Bloomfield Hills, MI

“...My family and I have long been fans of the Cranbrook Institute of Science.  People of all ages can enjoy science and technology through inventive displays, interactive exhibits, and informative presentations.  The institute, a “Michigan museum of natural history”, is a real treasure in Bloomfield Hills...”

The Detroit Institute of Art

..one of America's great museums. The Diego Rivera murals alone make it a must. It has many world class collections, hosts a fantastic film series and great temporary exhibits.

Detroit Zoo

...I volunteer at the zoo, it is a great place to spend a day with the animals, rain or shine. You can have breakfast with the giraffes, go underwater at the Arctic Ring of Life exhibit, walk in the butterfly garden...so much to do! Come visit us.

Greektown, Detroit

Greektown, Detroit is a unique place where one
can experience many facets of Greek culture. It
is like a big Greekfest all year round. You can find
people strolling down the streets any time of the
day, including winters. Weekend nights are the
most fun. I love it for the numerous restaurants
with authentic Greek "apalotita" (delicacies),
needless to say, the "cannolis" at Astoria are to
die for. Every time a friend or family member
visits me, we take the people-mover ride into
Greektown and they all love it. Shops, music,
Greektown Casino, there's so much to explore...
OPA!
