UNIVERSITY
AFFILIATION
Each physician holds a full-time faculty appointment at Wayne
State University. As faculty, they teach residents, medical students, and other graduate
students about the specialty of Otolaryngology.
Part of the teaching process is actual "hands-on"
experience with patients. For this reason, patients may at times be examined by students
before being examined and treated by attending faculty member physicians. Be assured that
at no time do students act independently of faculty physicians. The physician is always
present to discuss the case with the student and of course makes the decision on
treatment. If for some reason patients do not wish to be seen by residents or students, the receptionist should be informed.

THE
SPECIALTY OF OTOLARYNGOLOGY
Each of our faculty are graduates of an accredited residency program and board certified, or eligible for such certification in Otolaryngology. The more commonly known name for the specialty is Ear, Nose, and Throat Doctor. However, today's Otolaryngololgist receives broad based training in the medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the head and neck, making the name ENT Doctor obsolete. The Otolaryngologist is trained in:
Laryngology: Treatment of patients suffering from voice and swallowing disorders caused by benign or malignant conditions affecting the vocal cords and other vocal/swallowing tract structures.
Maxillofacial and Reconstructive Surgery: Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery: Treatment of patients with abnormalities of the face and mouth, including a variety of problems from birth defects (such as cleft palate) to accidents causing disfigurement to removal of tumors involving the tissues of the mouth. They also perform surgical procedures to reshape the facial structures to improve appearance and function, and other procedures to provide a youthful appearance.
Nose and Sinus Allergy: Diagnosis and treatment of patients with symptoms and manifestations of nose and sinus allergy including hay fever and other inhalant seasonal and perennial allergies which are present all year round.
Oncology: Treatment of cancer of the head and neck which may involve surgery, radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy. The Otolaryngologist works closely with Medical and Radiation Oncologist to design the best possible treatment program.
Otology: Medical and/or surgical treatment of diseases and
conditions of the ear, such as: ear infections, balance problems or dizziness, and hearing
problems.

PROFESSIONAL
SUPPORT SERVICES
Our doctors work closely with other professionals such as
Audiologists, Speech Pathologists, Dentists, Maxillofacial Prosthodontists, and Vestibular
Scientists in your care and treatment of patients.
Audiologists conduct diagnostic tests on patients with hearing and balance problems and provide rehabilitative services such as the selection and fitting of hearing aids.
Speech Pathologists provide diagnostic testing and treatment for disorders of voice, speech and swallowing.
The Maxillofacial Prosthodontist is a dentist with specialized training in the building of prostheses to improve appearance and function of structures of the head and neck area.
Audiology, hearing aid and vestibular testing services are available at most offices. Maxillofacial Prosthetic services are available at the University Health Center. Speech, Voice and Swallowing evaluation and treatment is available at the University Health Center, Lahser office and Bloomfield Professional Center.

HOSPITALIZATION
If it is necessary to hospitalize a patient, the professional office will make all the arrangements. Our doctors are on staff at
the Detroit Medical Center Institutions- Detroit Receiving Hospital, Harper Hospital and Children's' Hospital, Karmanos Hospital, Oakwood Hospital, Crittenton Hospital, Huron Valley
Hospital, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital-Oakland, Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital, Beaumont Hospital and Bon Secours-Cottage
Hospital, and they will arrange the admission process. After admitting arrangements are made, the hospital will contact the patient with specific information on such admission. When hospitalized, patients receive medical care from many sources besides the attending physician; therefore, it is not uncommon to receive several different bills for the care provided.

MEDICAL
INSURANCE
Physicians participate with Blue Cross-Blue Shield, Medicare and multiple other health plans. Specific plan participation is verified at the time of service. Services payable by insurance are billed directly to the insurance company involved. Many plastic surgery procedures are not covered by insurance and require full payment before scheduling of the procedure. The office staff will discuss payment policies at the time of the first clinic visit..
Insurance is considered a method of compensating the
patient for medical expenses. Insurance companies vary greatly in the method and amount of
payment made for medical services and may not entirely pay for the services provided. Any
deductible amounts, co-payments, or other allowable balances not paid by the insurance
company are the responsibility of the patient.

FEES
AND PAYMENT
Patients are expected to pay for professional services at the
time they receive them. Our fees are at a reasonable level, based upon community standards.
The office staff will discuss fee and payment requirements during the clinic visit.
For the convenience of the patient, Visa, Master Card, personal checks and cash are accepted. Questions about fees or payment policies can be discussed with our trained office staff.
Patients who have major medical coverage on their insurance
plans may have to submit receipts to the insurance carrier for direct reimbursement,
according to the terms of the policy. Major medical does not pay the doctor directly.
