EXTERNAL ROTATIONS

The resident also participates in a 6-weeks rotation in functional neurosurgery. At present, the rotation is located at Cleveland Clinic Foundation (CCF), but will be moved to HUH when appropriate faculty are available. The goals and objectives of this rotation are:

  1. to provide an exposure to functional neurosurgical procedures, including both ablative and augmentative procedures affecting the function of the nervous system;
  2. to provide experience in the evaluation and treatment of patients with movement disorders, chronic pain, and other disorders which can be treated by functional neurosurgical procedures and
  3. to introduce the concepts of functional neurosurgery, with emphasis on stereotactic techniques as well as the application and theoretical underpinnings of neurostimulation and direct delivery of therapeutic agents to the central and peripheral nervous system

The resident assists with all DBS procedures at CCF and is expected to present at Grand Rounds on this topic upon completion of the rotation and publish a clinical paper. The remaining time in this year is devoted to management of neurotrauma at DRH and increasing responsibility in management of patients requiring spine instrumentation. The resident at this level also coordinates the call schedule and the resident vacation schedule under the supervision of the chief resident.
