COMPUTER-ASSISTED NEUROSURGERY

The stereotactic and functional neurosurgery program employs computer-assisted navigational techniques to treat selected neurological diseases. Stereotactic biopsy allows precise location of lesions. Frameless stereotaxy will localize the lesion in three dimensional space to facilitate volumetric resection of the lesion, resulting in safer, more complete removal, and improved patient outcome. Brachytherapy consists of stereotactic placement of tiny radioactive pellets into brain tumors to deliver localized radiation to the tumor, while sparing surrounding functional brain. The Gamma Knife allows delivery of high dose focused beam radiation for patients with tumors, vascular disorders and functional disorders without an incision, with limited discomfort, and a hospital stay of generally less than one day.

A multi-disciplinary team approach uses sterotactic techniques to treat patients suffering from chronic pain, epilepsy or movement disorders. Precisely placed doses of neurotoxic agents, radiofrequency lesions or gamma beams, or surgical procedures are used to destroy malfunctioning nerves or brain regions functioning as pain generators. Sometimes, mini pumps are implanted under the skin for continuous delivery of anesthetic agents to the site of the lesion. Patients suffering from Parkinson's disease or other movement disorders can be treated with stereotactic navigational techniques.
