Welcome to the Department of Neurological Surgery at Wayne State University. Our
goal is to maintain the highest standards of clinical excellence and combine these
standards with innovative teaching, innovative research, and innovative care. We
want to carefully listen to your problems, gather appropriate information about
them from your caregivers, family, and physician, and arrive at a comprehensive
plan to provide you the best chance of a successful functional recovery and a life
of quality.
The present program in Neurosurgery at Wayne State University from its origin in
1946 has grown with the help of several important individuals; Dr. Gurdjian founded
the department and was Chairman of the department until 1970. Dr. L. Murray Thomas,
with combined interests in head injury and research, similar to those he learned
under the tutelage of Dr. Gurdjian mentored the department for 20 years as it crossed
into the microscopic microsurgical age. He did this by fostering superb clinical
and teaching skills among caring physicians. Dr. Guthikonda, the current chairman,
has assembled a nationally recognized team of physicians, specialized in innovative
spine care, cerebrovascular neurosurgery, pediatric neurosurgery, endovascular neurosurgery,
functional neurosurgery, and cranial nerve surgery in conjunction with Peter J.
Jannetta Clinics, and in partnership with Karmanos Cancer Institute.
The Department of Neurological Surgery is committed to training individuals to become
independent practitioners providing the highest quality neurosurgical care. We do
that with hands-on faculty who provide day-to-day care of patients who entrust themselves
to the Department of Neurological Surgery at Wayne State University. We invite you
to take a look at us and learn more about this dynamic department.
