NBEC - Translational Research, Collaboration & Partnership Plans and Objectives
![]()
The generation of new knowledge and the advancement of our understanding of the fundamentals of nature, form the very foundation of education and are wholly dependent upon the exchange of these discoveries with others. The Center has begun work on its objective to put in place a variety of mechanisms whereby students and researchers from within the Center, as well as from throughout the national and international scientific community, can come together to learn about and discuss observations that are relevant to the Center’s mission. Such information dissemination necessarily will be multimedia-based, with segments targeted to specific audiences. Investigator knowledge transfer will initially be based upon the publications by participating Center researchers. Within the Center the senior leadership group meets regularly to review thematic developments and progress. The senior leadership also evaluates each Center member on a regular basis to assure scientific advancement. The Center plans a weekly seminar series. This seminar series, modeled after the school’s ‘Pioneers in Science Distinguished Lecture’ series, will feature regular seminars that include at least 8 speakers from outside the University. As a component of this distinguished lecture series, the invited speakers are expected to spend two full days on campus, one day of which is solely devoted to Center students. Additional seminar speakers will be drawn from members of the Center’s participating institutions as well as from area universities and industries. The first such symposium was held last year and drew participants from five countries and attendance from throughout the US and metropolitan scientific community of Detroit. Each annual symposium will have a theme identified by the Center’s symposium committee. The symposium will be a daylong series of presentations with speakers from other Science and Technology Centers as well as from emerging and converging disciplinary fields of interest in this Center’s focus. Once the Center receives substantial extramural funding, the Center will also sponsor an annual Pilot Project program. Such a Pilot Project program will solicit applications for funding from throughout the faculties of this Center’s participating institutions. Emphasis will be placed on new investigators interested in establishing research programs in the areas on nano- and/or femto-science; established investigators from these areas who are interested in exploring new initiatives which diverge significantly from their current, ongoing research; and established investigators from other disciplinary areas who are interested in applying their expertise to the field of nano- or femto-science. This Pilot Project program is expected to bring an interdisciplinary interest and value to the Center’s mission.
