Create strong passwords
Just as it’s prudent to lock your house when you're away, it's important to protect access to our computing resources. A single account with a trivially guessable password is a danger to the entire network.
At the SoM, passwords must be at least six characters long; may not contain your user name or any part of your full name; and must contain elements from three of the four following types of characters:
- Upper case letters
- Lower case letters
- Numbers
- Special Symbols (!@#$%^&*=)
Examples of setting a strong password:
Choose a password with an embedded number that looks the same as the letter:
- Tran5fer (the numeric five "5" replaces the alphabetic "S," transfer)
- B0nsai (the numeric zero "0" replaces the alphabetic "O," bonsai)
- F1ower (the numeric one "1" replaces the alphabetic "L," flower)
- Educat!on (the numeric one "!" replaces the alphabetic "I," education)
Choose a combination of numbers and letters that produce a sentence:
- Get2work (Get to work)
- osacanUC (Oh say can you see)
- Ima1usr (I am a number one user)
Use obscure, personal facts about yourself:
- Your first car - 65Chevy
- Your favorite snack - 7Layerdip
Additional information about passwords:
- Do not write a password down. This defeats the purpose of passwords.
- Do not give your password to anyone at anytime.
Please note:
Changing the password on one system does not mean that it's changed everywhere. For example, changing your SoM e-mail password will not change your Banner password on campus, your IDX password or your DMC Citrix password.
When to change your password:
When your password is about to expire, you usually receive a daily notice via e-mail (e.g., "Your password will expire in XX days").
Forget your password?:
If you cannot remember your password but had the forethought to set the Password Challenge Question and Response on your account, then you can go to the SoM Directory page, do a search for your entry and select the Reset Password link at the bottom of the page. You can then select the Question that you previously set and then enter the answer to that question. The system will then check to see if that was the question you requested and if you've provided the correct answer.
If you cannot remember your password and didn't set a Password Challenge Question and Response, then you must come to Scott Hall Room 1313 with a picture ID in order to have MSIS reset the password. No passwords are to be issued over the phone unless the password challenge question and response has been set and correctly answered.
