UNIX Support/System Administration Services
As many faculty and staff members within the School of Medicine are aware, high-performance computing is often required to perform various complex tasks relating to data analysis, imaging, and research.
To this end, Medical School Information Systems is pleased to offer a new service to School of Medicine faculty and staff to support these high-performance systems by providing managed UNIX support services to the School of Medicine community.
Description of Services:
Network Operations is now able to provide managed UNIX support services for the following UNIX-based operating systems:
- Sun Solaris - Versions 8,9
- Silicon Graphics IRIX - Versions 6.5.x
- Linux: Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SuSE, Macintosh Darwin/Yellowdog
Users have the option of having Network Operations actively manage your systems on a yearly basis, or provide assistance on an incident by incident basis. It is also possible for us to provide training, for example, to a local/departmental computer technician on a particular system administration issue.
Some of the services that we provide include:
- System Analysis and Design
- Purchasing Assistance
- Software Installation
- Security Patch Installation
- System Security Audits/Vulnerability Assessment Reports
System Administration including:
- Web server setup/maintenance
- Group file sharing
- Other tasks as required
- Operating System Upgrades as Required
- Hardware/peripheral installation
- Visualization/Stereo setup/maintenance
- Support Contracts
- Other UNIX related issues as requested by end users
For a managed system, we have broken our support program into a tiered structure. Prices range from $500 to $1500 per year depending on the desired level of management.

Lastly, for an incident by incident basis, the cost will be $75.00 per hour or portion thereof.
