Firewall Services

MSIS Networking Services is always adamant when it comes to security.  In the same approach that Antivirus protection has been established, MSIS Networking Services (in conjunction with C&IT) is taking the same multi-tiered approach to the Firewall environment.

WSU's C&IT department is currently working on establishing a Firewall around all of WSU.  This will add Internet Security to all networked computers and devices at WSU from outside attacks.

MSIS is working on the initiative of establishing a Firewall around the School of Medicine Network.  This will add another layer of security for all SOM networked computers and devices from any attacks outside SOM.  This project is slated to be completed by Spring of 2002.

Currently MSIS Networking Services maintains a firewall around the SOM Server farm to protect SOM Systems maintained by MSIS.  This adds another layer of security for all SOM servers from any attacks outside trusted SOM server farm.

The projected plan of what service ports will be closed and what will be opened will be determined after the SOM Firewall is in place.  After a period of discovery, MSIS will know what ports are in use and by what systems.  Then all ports not in use will be closed.  Then all ports being used will be restricted to those systems that are using those ports.  Any need of having another service port opened or a port opened for another system will need to be requested thru the MSIS Helpdesk at 313-577-1527.

Please Note that none of the firewalls will restrict access "to" the internet except in cases where a compromised system has been discovered.
