SOM Server Backups

As explained in the previous section, it is vital that backup copies be kept. Magnetic tapes are normally used for this, as they are cheaper than disks and can easily be taken to a safe location away from the School of Medicine.

Critical SOM services are backed up by the tape systems and tapes are kept 4-5 weeks.  We do not backup for archival purposes, only for system disaster recovery.  We will restore file and database data if it's within this 4-5 week window.  We will not restore mailboxes for the sole purpose of retrieving a deleted email message. These include

Schedule and rotations for the backups

  • Incremental backups (daily backup of files that have changed) occur Monday thru Friday starting between 8:15pm and 11:15pm.  Incremental tapes tend to  get overwritten each week since the full weekend backups are more current than the previous week's daily backups.
  • Full Weekly backups occur early Saturday morning starting 3am and continue through out the weekend.  Full backups are overwritten once a month.
  • System State Backups occur every weekend on Sunday's starting at 3:15pm.
  • SQL Database servers are full backups each time.
  • The Exchange Cluster M-F is backed up to the Scott Hall SAN (disk-based backup on the G drive) and the weekend job is backed up to the Dell LTO array.  In addition, the Exchange partitions have a mirror set on the C&IT SAN and Scott Hall SAN in which the snapshots (resyncing & breaking of mirrorsets) occur.  The C&IT snapshots occur every 4 hrs and the Scott Hall snapshot occurs once a day.  Due to the Scott Hall SAN performance, the Scott Hall snapshots do not all occur at the same time and the time varies depending on the server.
