WSU Medical School Information Systems Department's Network Operations
Network Services Group

The tasks of the MSIS Network Services Group is sometimes difficult to quantify since many of the tasks occur without many people even realizing that they have occurred.

Besides working with C&IT (WSU's Campus Computer group) on Network issues, the MSIS Networking Group deals with the SOM Unix and Windows networking infrastructure so the end-users workstations can more easily access SOM resources such as databases, applications and file and print services.

Some of the tasks that are quantifiable include:

  • Maintaining Name Services (DNS, Wins, etc)
  • Managing DHCP Services and IP network segments assigned to SOM
  • Managing and maintaining the SOM Firewalls.
  • Managing and maintaining the SOM Email Systems.
  • Managing and maintaining the SOM Web Servers.
  • Managing and maintaining the SOM Database Servers.
  • Managing and maintaining the SOM Application Servers.
  • Managing and maintaining the SOM File & Print Servers.
  • Managing and maintaining the SOM Directory Services infrastructure.
  • Backing up critical SOM servers for Disaster Recovery purposes.
  • Managing and maintaining the central SOM Antivirus server which distributes the latest antivirus definitions and scanning schedules for MSIS maintained workstations.
  • Managing and maintaining the SOM SMS Server and pushing out necessary applications and patches to MSIS maintained workstations.  Also, collects inventory MSIS managed computer assets.

Because of the way systems intertwine with one another, the MSIS Networking group is more than likely to get involved with any SOM project.  The MSIS group is constantly looking for ways to improve the reliability, efficiency and manageability of the SOM computing environment.  For more information on some of the services being performed, choose an option from the menu.
